The Crown variety of pipes by Poul Winslow are often referred to as the “poor man’s Winslow.” Thus I consider myself a poor man when buying this pipe from VegasSmokes.com. The list price was $190 And I got it for $123. Style wise, this was part of my craving for partial rustication. I must admit there were a few others I liked better, but they were already sold. The top rusticated surface is actually a bit larger than I was expecting but I do find the smooth part of the surface comfortable for lighting and for covering with my finger when stoking. For smoking characteristics, this pipe stays somewhat cool to the touch as you can hold it easily from the wide lip. An interesting thing I noticed is that the bowl tapers and the intake is from the very bottom centered on the bowl. This seems to be good for smoking every last bit, but it can also lead to ash intake. As I usually pack smaller bowls less tightly to allow air through, this seems to work well when packing only once after all the tobacco is in the pipe (as opposed to packing periodically when filling the bowl). When smoking, I particularly like the way the smoke rolls over the top of the pipe. It has a mezmarizing effect similar to watching low lying fog drift across a field.
According to the seller: “This “Old School” Danish freehand features wonderfully balanced straight grain with perfectly center bird’seye grain on the bowl heel. The bowl rim is covered with tight bird’seye grain and natural burl. Hand cut stem.”
